Police officers fired tear gas at a memorial gathering at Lagos’s Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday, disrupting a ceremony organised by the Enough is Enough (EiE) movement to honour victims of the #EndSARS protests of October 2020. Participants, including activists, journalists and political figures, reportedly scrambled for safety as the event was disrupted.
Among those present were Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Funso Doherty of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The incident has renewed concerns about peaceful assembly and police handling of public demonstrations. At the time of reporting, the Lagos State Police Command’s explanation for the use of tear gas was not available in the cited reports.
The #EndSARS movement began in October 2020, with young Nigerians demanding an end to police brutality, harassment and extortion associated with the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The 20 October 2020 Lekki Toll Gate shooting remains a major point of national debate, while calls for police accountability and reform continue six years later. Tuesday’s disruption has once again placed these demands and the right to peaceful protest in the spotlight.
