The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned five suspects before the Justice Oputa State High Court in Owerri, Imo State, over the abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and a civilian along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway on October 1, 2026. The victims were travelling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when they were kidnapped.
All 21 victims were rescued on October 7 during a joint security operation in a forest in Imo State. Subsequent intelligence-led operations involving the DSS, military and police resulted in the arrest of five suspects in Rivers and Abia states between October 10 and 14.
Meanwhile, three other suspects reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds, prompting an ongoing search by security operatives. Authorities are also pursuing other suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate as investigations continue into the incident.
