NIGERIA’S POWER GRID RESTORED AFTER DISRUPTION, BUT SUPPLY CONCERNS PERSIST*

Nigeria’s electricity grid has returned to normal operation following a partial disturbance on Monday, 19 October 2026. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported multiple trippings on the 330-kilovolt (330kV) transmission network at approximately 12:40 p.m. Working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), it restored system stability and clarified that the incident did not amount to a complete national grid collapse.

Despite the restoration announcement, electricity generation reportedly plunged from approximately 3,840 megawatts (MW) at 7:00 a.m. to 477MW by 1:00 p.m. on Monday, with several generating stations recording zero output during the disruption. The decline coincided with power interruptions in parts of the country, highlighting the vulnerability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.

The incident has renewed calls for investment in transmission infrastructure, improved maintenance and more reliable electricity generation. Unstable power supply increases operating costs for businesses, disrupts households and poses challenges for healthcare facilities that depend on electricity for critical equipment. Although NISO says normal operations have resumed, sustained electricity supply—not just grid restoration—remains the real test.
