Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Industries Limited, has attributed Nigeria’s high petrol prices to smuggling incentives and broader global market pressures. He said petrol sells for 30–50 per cent more in neighbouring countries, creating an incentive for traders to divert fuel intended for the Nigerian market across the borders.
Dangote also warned that ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East could shift concerns in the downstream market from petrol prices to product availability. However, he said the Dangote Refinery remains prepared to meet domestic demand.
His remarks came during the launch of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals’ ₦2.15tn Initial Public Offering on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), the first refinery to be listed on the exchange in its 66-year history. The offer comprises 4.1 billion ordinary shares at ₦525 per share, with a minimum subscription of ₦5,250, and will run until October 13, 2026.
