SCIENTISTS CALL FOR HOMEGROWN AI AND REGULATION TO BOOST AFRICAN PUBLIC HEALTH RESEARCH

Nigerian scientists have called for the development of African-led artificial intelligence systems and stronger regulations to improve public health research across the continent. Speaking at the International Research Centre of Excellence (IRCE) annual scientific workshop in Abuja, experts urged the development of AI models trained on African datasets to better address local health challenges.

Renowned virologist Prof. Oyewale Tomori said AI could improve disease surveillance and accelerate responses to health challenges when properly deployed. Dr. Kolawole Oladipo stressed the need for regulatory frameworks to ensure AI is used responsibly for scientific research while protecting public safety.

The Africa CDC has also highlighted the need for ethical and culturally relevant governance of AI in healthcare, particularly to address bias and protect data sovereignty. Experts warned that without investment in local expertise and infrastructure, Africa could remain overly dependent on foreign technologies, potentially deepening existing health inequalities.
