NAFDAC DG DEFENDS TENURE, SAYS SHE RETURNED FROM US TO RESTORE NIGERIA’S IMAGE.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has rejected calls for her resignation, saying she returned to Nigeria after 34 years in the United States to help restore the country’s image. Adeyeye, who had retired from her academic career, described her return as a decision to serve Nigeria.

She also challenged those accusing her of demanding money from contractors to provide evidence. According to Adeyeye, NAFDAC inherited ₦3.2 billion in liabilities when she assumed office in 2017, while 70–80 per cent of its laboratory equipment was not functioning. She said about ₦3.1 billion of the liabilities had been cleared by November 2018.

Adeyeye also highlighted NAFDAC’s progress from maturity level one to level three by March 2022, making it the third agency in Africa to achieve the feat. The agency joined the International Medical Device Regulators Forum in 2023 and the International Council for Harmonisation in 2025. She maintained that NAFDAC remains focused on reforms to protect Nigerians and improve its international reputation.
