At least 16 Nigerian doctors practising in the United Kingdom have been suspended or struck off the medical register over the past year by the UK Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS). MPTS handled cases involving Nigerian doctors almost every month between July 2025 and July 2026. Ten doctors received suspensions, while three were removed from the UK Medical Register.
Among those struck off was Olubunmi Adeagbo-Sheikh, a gastroenterologist convicted of fraudulently claiming £11,000 in benefits using a fake tenancy agreement. Gynaecologist Aloaye Foy-Yamah was removed after a tribunal found he had raped a woman, while Joseph Onwude was struck off for continuing to practise and prescribe medication after his licence was withdrawn.
Other suspensions were handed down for theft, reckless driving, prescribing excessive opioids, and failing to properly assess a septic patient who later died. The UK remains a top destination for Nigerian health workers, with over 5,600 doctors relocating in the past decade.
