Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the Executive Committee resigned on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Gusau confirmed his resignation in Abuja, saying it was in the “overriding interest of Nigerian football”* and would pave the way for reforms.
The resignations follow a difficult period for Nigeria’s national teams. The Super Eagles missed the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing to DR Congo on penalties, while the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup after a 2–1 defeat to South Africa, ending their record of appearing at every edition since 1991.
The leadership change comes ahead of the NFF elective congress scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State. An emergency Congress meeting will determine the next steps, with the new leadership expected to restore confidence, strengthen the national teams and address longstanding challenges in Nigerian football administration.
